Why Thousands of Indonesians are Choosing Japan Over Other Countries

I’ve seen a significant shift in the number of Indonesians choosing Japan as their destination for work and living. According to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省), foreign workers in Japan numbered 2.04 million in 2023, with a notable increase in Indonesian workers. In fact, Japan has become a more attractive option for Indonesians than countries in the Middle East, where many Indonesians have traditionally sought work.

Many of my Indonesian colleagues have shared their stories of overcoming challenges to find success in Japan. Rifqi, a software engineer from Jakarta, was initially hesitant to move to Japan due to the language barrier, but eventually adapted and is now working for a top tech company in Tokyo. Tuan, a software engineer from Hanoi, echoed a similar sentiment, highlighting the high standard of living and job opportunities in Japan despite the initial language and cultural challenges.

However, navigating the complex Japanese visa application process and language barriers can be daunting for many foreign workers. To make the process smoother, it’s essential to research the different types of visas available, brush up on your Japanese language skills, and network with other foreign workers and join online communities to learn more about the job market and living in Japan.

For those considering moving to Japan, here are some practical steps to take:

  • Research the different types of visas available, including the Specified Skilled Worker visa and the Technical Intern Training visa
  • Brush up on your Japanese language skills, as proficiency in Japanese is often a requirement for many jobs
  • Network with other foreign workers and join online communities to learn more about the job market and living in Japan
  • Consider working with a recruiter who specializes in placing foreign workers in Japan
  • Average salary ranges for foreign workers in Japan can vary from ¥200,000 to ¥600,000 per month, depending on the industry and level of experience

With the right mindset, skills, and knowledge, you can thrive in Japan and build a successful career and life. From the vibrant cities of Tokyo and Osaka to the stunning natural landscapes of Hokkaido and Okinawa, Japan has something to offer for everyone.
